Alexa Still Wish: Music of Valerie Coleman featuring: Requiem Milonga Danza de la Mariposa Amazonia Fanmi Imèn Elegy In the News...Valerie Coleman will be the 2024/25 Sandbox Composer-in-Residence of Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra(3/18/23): “A collaboration with SPCO is more than a concert or commission,” said Coleman. “It is an invitation into their world, through music, ideas, memories and new inside jokes that build a lasting connection. This residency for me represents being welcomed into a family in which we create and laugh together, building an exciting chapter within SPCO's legacy."
Praise for Coleman's Seven O'Clock Shout at the Sphinx Organization's 25th Anniversary Concert at Carnegie Hall.(2/8/23): The most capable handling of the orchestra came in Valerie Coleman’s Seven O’Clock Shout, commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra and premiered during the Covid year of 2020. Shimmering trumpet solos introduced this initially delicate piece, featuring superb solo work from practically every woodwind instrument.
Valerie Coleman featured inThe Boston Globe ahead of Umoja performances(2/16/23): At this year's Grammy Awards, the New York Youth Symphony, a tuition-free orchestra made up of musicians ages 12 to 22 under the direction of conductor Michael Repper, was nominated for an album of music by Black women composers, including Valerie Coleman’s Umoja: Anthem for Unity.

But the art of composition is broader than that and is much like how painters blend colors to depict life or fantasy.”
A Feature within WQXR Classical..(2/4/23): An artist at the forefront of innovation in 21st century classical music, Valerie Coleman is best known for her prowess as a flutist and composer. A distinguished artist in her own right, Coleman is also well known as the creator of Imani Winds, an American Wind Quintet dedicated to diversifying the classical wind repertoire. Coleman’s compositions center around a similar message of recognizing stories and perspectives previously untold. Coleman musically weaves these perspectives into a sonic mosaic of classical, folk, and urban traditions.
