RUBISPHERES #4 For Bassoon and Alto Saxophone Duo.
As part of an ongoing series of suites depicting the concrete jungle, grunge and grooves of living in a big city. The next installment of Rubispheres features is a slow milonga first movement, called Homage to Astor and a "hard groove" 2nd movement called punk-tuations'. Like Rubispheres #1-3, which was written for wind trio (flute, clarinet and bassoon), each installment within the series is inspired by and written for virtuoso musicians. Recently premiered on March 26, 2015 by Ana Garcia and Alex Davis at The National Opera Center and will be available for purchase in late June. Hair, Cloth and Thread Commissioned by consortium led by Aark Duo, Tabitha Easley Peters and Justin Alexander. HC&T is a multi-movement suite based on the works of the award winning visual artist Sonya Clark and her "Hair Craft Project". Coleman creates a vividly colored, 'big country and open sky' soundscape for Alto Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Cello and Piano. A musical hybrid of Native American and African cultures, "Freedmen" honors the legacy of former slaves who were adopted into the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Seminole and Chickasaw nations through emancipation or marriage.

WISH Sonatine Valerie Coleman's first work for flute and piano, Wish, was inspired by and titled from poet Fred D'Aguiar's work. Wish is a dramatic tone poem for flutist and pianist alike, depicting the Middle Passage in which Africans were trafficked across the Atlantic by tall ships to be sold into slavery. SONATINE for Clarinet and Piano item #: 114-41591 Sonatine is an 8-minute recital work in one movement inspired by Coleman’s travels throughout Europe, most notably while touring with jazz icon Steve Coleman. The work is reminiscent of a performance at a nightclub, where players wailed soulful tunes and riffs on a lovely summer evening in Berlin. Sonatine starts on fire, and thrives with intensity, rhythmic drive, and drama for both clarinetist and pianist. For advanced performers. |
